1) What factors do you think might help to explain why the presidential institution has grown in stature and power?
Our founding fathers saw there presidencies as a role in the sense of checks and balances, a simple overseer of congress to make sure things were being handled accurately. They also, were gave the right to veto without approval of the congress. However over the past three hundred years their political power has increased due to many different factors a few of these that play a major role in their growth are, article two of the constitution, military capability, the media and also the role of the executive branch lawyering and these are just a few.
Article two of the united states constitution section two the presidential clause 1, gives the president the right to be the commander and chief of the military in the united states, he also is given the right to grant pardons for offences against the united states, except impeachments. However it is also gives congress the right to declare war not the president. Now however the president has been given this right as well as the right to take action in times of national emergency. Also, the military and intelligence capabilities of the executive branch or presidential branch are extreme. For example the bush administration took the right to engage in war in response to 9-11 a perceived threat to national security, which became known as the “bush doctorin” also bush issued the executive order allowing the presidential surveillance program which allowed the NSA to monitor communications outside the united states without obtaining a warrant. I feel this may have gone so far for the president however it was permitted. Some actions that are presidents have taken are not responsible or should not be permitted. George Washington once said “government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is a force, like a fire it is a dangerous servant and fearful master, never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible...
