Culture is an anthropology parlance to describe people's way of life. Throughout two articles in “When Brothers Share a Wife” and “So Who Needs Love! In Japan, Many Married Couple Survived Without It”, Melvyn C. Goldstein and Nicholas D. Kristof explained why there were such exotic traditions and how they functioned to help the society as a whole. The most important advantage in fraternal polyandry in Tibet was that it had only one set of heirs per generation. It was furthermore an economic advantage; it valued the first born child or most of the time known as an eldest brother, which was primogeniture. The eldest brother inherited the family estate. By keeping only one set of heirs, primogeniture kept the family estates intact over generations. On the contrary, Kristof’s article talked about arranged marriage in Japan in which I felt there was no happiness and love in Japanese women during the article. Mrs. Kusukawa got to married to the love of her life but still said arranged marriages were better. Thus, if there were strength of Japanese arranged marriages, they would be low expectations, patience and shame. It would not be surprised for Japanese women who know their spouses were having affairs, because in most arranged married, it was based on low expectation in which the couple found nothing in common, and consequently it was not so much a reason for a divorce. In another circumstances, Mrs. Fukuyama’s daughter found out her husband was having an affair, was being told by her mother than she needed to be patience which also known as “gaman”. In Japan, “gaman” came up whenever marriage was discussed. It meant toughing it out, enduring hardship, and moreover “gaman” was regarded with pride as Japanese’s national trait.
