  Families are as different as the people who make up the family unit and their values and traditions need to be recognized and respected. The family is where health promotion and disease prevention begin and their values, beliefs and health practices are an important part of this influence. When providing family care, utilizing a family focused approach is very important in order to understand and care for every family member. The purpose of this paper is to complete a family health assessment by utilizing Gordon’s functional health patterns.
Marjory Gordon is a nursing theorist who in 1987 created a nursing assessment theory known as “Gordon’s 11 functional health patterns”. In her theory Gordon has identified 11 functional health patterns that can be used to identify and promote areas of wellness as well as areas of health concerns. (Edelman & Mandle 2010)
Our family consists of John, 42, who works for Home Depot, his wife Mary 39, who is a part time Administrative Assistant and their 3 kids, John Jr. (JJ) 10 5th grade, Will, 8 3rd grade and Amy 5 Kindergarten. The family lives in a suburb of Phoenix, they own their home and it is in a middle class neighborhood that consists of families of different ethnic origins.
Values, Health Perception
John stated that they belong to the Catholic Church and they go to Mass every Sunday as a family, the family say prayers before meals and at bedtime. The family also helps at a food bank every month and participates in their Church’s outreach program for the less fortunate. John stated that when he was a child his family helped in a charity kitchen and John wants to instill these same values in his children.   Mary reported that the family does not have any chronic illnesses but they do get colds sometimes and Mary has her own cold treatment consisting of Tylenol, orange juice and...
