• What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination is defined as the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prefudice or for other arbitrary reasons.( Richard T. Schaefer, 2012)
Discrimination is different from being prejudice or stereotyping because it is more focused on acting out your prejudice or stereotype. A stereotype jis a generalization of a group of people, a prejudice is a first impression that usually is based on a stereotype and discrimination is acting upon these and actually harming due to prejudice and stereotyping.
• What are the causes of discrimination?
There are several causes for discrimination, which are the same for prejudice and stereotyping. Race is regarding a persons skin color or where they are from, ethinicity is the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition. Age is people discriminate people because of their age, usually older adults, gender are people discriminating against males and females and sexuality are people that discriminate others based on their sexual orientation such as; transgender and transsexual individuals.
• How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they different?
I believe that discrimination is discrimination no matter what. Each group has its own discriminations and they arent’ the same as the other.
