My Essay is based around a group of 4 students, each having to find and post an article on communication. Post it on to a discussion board online. Comments are made from a positive and negative point of view from each of the students.
The first article was my own on “Communication gaps and mishaps”[ Grainger M,2011]. It was interesting to see how each of us commented on it, it made me realise we don’t all see things the same , and how constructive this has been to me .I feel very strongly about the “jargon” used between the professionals. I feel it needs to be kept between the professionals and not used when communicating with the patients themselves. I agree with one of the students comments “ we need to make the patients comfortable and help them to understand what it is that is going on “ and in a way that they understand . By using the shared approach giving the patient a sense of empowerment, we as nurses should encourage this to make patients comfortable and help them understand clearly what   they can expect. The second article was on “communicating with children with asthma” [ Callery P 2013]. I found i could relate to this article as a parent, who has at times been in a situation where a doctor has been talking to me rather than my son about his problem. My son could talk and understand what was being said , so why was the questions not being asked to him, he was the one who could answer, after all, he was the one with the problem , not me .It   is very easy sometimes to forget the child patient is the person with the problem and not the parent. It is important for the professional to have good communication skills , good training would enhance this . This then would enable the professional to provide child patients and the parent with good clear conversation which the child would understand with the parent, rather than the parent and not the child.
