Writing Assignment 1 (WA1): Request for Approval:   In modern business, requests to conduct and fund efforts such as business initiatives, research projects, and other actions demand good organization with clear expression to deliver a persuasive message that gets approval.  You will write a business memo to a specific person, by name and title, in a specific organization (yours or elsewhere).  Ask for approval for a specific action--preferably a real need in a current situation.  If you are not working in an organization right now, you may create a fictitious situation with a hypothetical company, supervisor, and position title for yourself.  
FORMAT:  Your Request for Approval should be approximately 375 words long.  Be sure to use correct business memo format.
EXAMPLES:  Here are a few possible examples of a requested action you might use.  Feel free to choose any other appropriate topic for this assignment:
(a) You might request funding by your organization to sponsor your attendance at a Business Writing course at a local college.  In your memo, give a clear justification for taking the course and demonstrate the likely benefits to your organization.  Be specific about the time and costs involved.
(b) You might request funding by your organization to purchase a new piece of software or hardware to upgrade an existing system.  Explain why the current set-up cannot continue to be used adequately and show benefits to the organization that an upgrade could bring.  Also answer any likely questions or objections.
(c) You might request funding by your organization to start a promotional program via the Internet using social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or others.  Explain the need and expected payoffs. Resist the temptation to say there are "no costs."  (For example, on-the-job time is a cost.)  Demonstrate a probable return-on-investment.
