In this video Goleman identified social and emotional intelligence. As I understood, emotional intelligence is a knowing how we handle ourselves, understanding our own emotions and how they affect us, being self-aware of emotional conditions. Another aspect of emotional intelligence is being able to control your emotions and direct them into desired flow. Social intelligence is very relative to emotional intelligence. It is awareness of other people emotions and feelings. Empathy and compassion, interest in other people, ability to listen and understand them falls under social intelligence category. Since we live in a society we have to take into consideration emotional experiences of other people.
The most interesting point that I have captured from watching a video is that emotions can be implemented in business. When people are able to control their emotions they are able to bring more positive energy in the working environment making it a win-win situation for everybody. Educating leaders social intelligence will provide more collaborative and cooperative work process which in the end will result in higher efficiency and productivity. Relationships at work are almost the same thing as live relationships. It is a two way road. And leaders/managers should understand that employees are not unfeeling robots but rather same human beings who share the emotional experiences with each other. Then why not to make them positive for everyone? As had been discussed before leaders should be able to change emotional energy in the group. Passion is a great way to support work process emotionally.
I considered the video a bit dry. I think, to really understand the position where Goleman stands at one have to read his book.
