Government assistance is something a lot of people in the United States depend on. It is a program that helps those people and families in need, rather it be food stamps, cash assistance, medical cards, WIC, etc. There are many advantages and disadvantages to this program just like there are with a lot of other programs. Even though there are advantages, I believe there is one bigger con that trumps them all and that is people taking advantage of the program. Even though Government Assistance is very important and a lot of people depend on it, states should be required to do drug testing because a lot of people take advantage of this program and kids are starving and people are overdosing on drug use more now than before.
“44 million people were living below the poverty line in 2009 and this left them asking for help from the government.” Government assistance programs were created for people like this to help Americans with everyday needs of life. Rather it be to look and find another job, food, shelter, or even educational benefits. Every program gets taken advantage of but sometimes they do more good than they are bad and other times, it’s the complete opposite.
Food assistance is something that is offered through a program called (SNAP). With SNAP, you can buy the food you need with a certain amount. You cannot buy medications, liquor, beer, hot foods, or food at restaurants. SNAP also offers a program for women or families with children called WIC. This program helps with bread, eggs, cheese, cereal, formula, and baby food. This program is the one that is highest taken advantage of because people will sell this help to buy whatever else they want and neglect their children or let their children go without.
