Be Persistent - Refusing to give up or let go; persevering obstinately.
Don’t Give Up -
1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.'
4"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' "
This morning, through the power and direction of the Holy Spirit, I wish to address a subject that is pertinent to each of us individually, and collectively as a church. The events that have unfolded over the past few months have caused some to question:-
* whether there is a God, and
* whether He hears us.
* On the backdrop of these questions, I would like each of you to recall the resolute statement made by Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." The Church took a stand for in the name of the Lord, and we have no apologies for it. The outcome of the referendum does not change our stand.
* “to show them that they should always pray and not give up”. For the purpose of sermonic attention, I would like us to focus on the latter part of this verse, “and not give up”.
* I do not wish to down play the importance of prayer, but Christ is clear in this parable that prayer goes hand in hand with persistence.
