What is Nour?
Nour is a non-profit organisation which has been recently established to help raise awareness of the deafeningly silent occurrence of domestic violence within our homes and especially in Muslim communities. We believe that having a strong Islamic ethos, based on the Islamic literature from both the Qur’an and the prophetic teachings, will help us with our condemnation of this social injustice that unfortunately is prevalent in Muslim homes.

One of the aims of Nour is to raise awareness of the occurrence of domestic violence in Muslim communities – and to tackle this head-on. We aim to do this via various methods of campaigning, such as hosting informative events, Islamic seminars, workshops, and more. Nour also aims to help victims of domestic violence, encouraging sufferers to come forward and break the silence as well as helping offenders stop their violent abuse.
The name Nour, which translates as light in Arabic, has connotations associated with peace, tranquillity and hope. We wanted to be a service that provides that very spark of light during the darkest days of our victims. Our full slogan is Nour – strength, support, solace. We work to help all victims find their strength to take action, get the support from their family and friends and from Nour, to enable them to find solace in their life with Allah through whichever path they decide to pursue.
Currently, Nour provides access to Islamic and legal advisors as well as health advisors such as medical experts and counsellors – all of whom are qualified and experienced in this sensitive field of work and have background knowledge of Islam.
