Introduction
Participation rates in higher education have never been greater. Australian university numbers have steadily increased since the 1960’s and continue to do so (Norton, 2013). Furthermore, the steady increase of university applications has been greatly contributed to by women.   According to statistics, 58.3% of applications to Australian universities in 2011, were made by females ( DEEWR 2011). Such advancement into higher education has lead to women making tremendous progress in education and the workplace during the past 50 years (Hill, Corbett & Rose, 2010), whilst also allowing women to have a greater understanding of the importance of education and career in today’s society. Although such positive advancements in higher educational outcomes have taken place for women, influential barriers have seemingly been a factor in such educational choices. This essay will argue that a womans choice to participate in higher education is influenced by gender. It will also be argued that being a woman not only influences the decision to participate in university, but also which higher educational course is undertaken. Furthermore, this essay will explore the reasons as to why these influences may exist. It will be shown that amongst the various possible influences that impact a womans decision to obtain higher education, factors such as Stereotyping, Gender Inequality and Feminism, are real and contributing influences in a womens decision to participate in Higher Education in Australia today.

One factor that is an important influence in a womans choice to participate in University and subsequent area of study, is stereotyping. Many researches and individuals still believe that the main role of the woman is towards family and secondary role is towards employment (Pocock, 2003)....
