Crowdsourcing as technique
Alsever, (2007) Define crowdsourcing technique as a method of outsourcing projects to a distributed network of people. But the basic idea is to tap into the collective intelligence of the public at large to complete business-related tasks that a company would normally either perform itself or outsource to a third-party provider. Yet free labor is only a narrow part of crowdsourcing appeal. More importantly, it enables managers to expand the size of their talent pool while also gaining deeper insight into what customers really want.
The technique is often used to facilitate the distribution of these projects, splitting large projects into small tasks, making it possible for a project that once took days to be completed by “cloud labor” in minutes. These projects often require human judgment - for example, identifying sentiment or tone - that are too complicated for computers to process, and are therefore completed much more efficiently by crowds.
For example, if a natural disaster strikes an area, locals can capture and upload images before a professional news crew arrives. In addition, rather than hire a professional poll taker, using a Web site or blog to ask for public opinion may be the fastest way to generate comments and suggestions.
Crowdsourcing can improve productivity and creativity while minimizing labor and research expenses .Using the Internet to solicit feedback from an active and passionate community (populace) can reduce the amount of time spent collecting data through formal focus groups or trend research.
