Critical study on Andrew Mackay’s, ‘long-eared owl.’
I am writing my critical study on a picture of a ‘long-eared owl,’ which was drawn by Andrew Mackay. It was finished during the year of 1990, which means the painting in 22 years old. The picture I have drawn for my visual study is an ECEO, which means ‘art cards, editions and originals.’   ECEO’s have one special rule, which is that they have to be exactly 3.5 x 2.5 inches and cost £20 each. Mackay used acrylic paints to do this picture and painted straight onto an acid-free mount board.   I was attracted to this painting of an owl because I wanted a closer look on wildlife and investigate just how much detail birds have and finally, how easy/difficult it is to draw birds.
  Andrew Mackay was born in Bristol, UK, in 1965 but now lives in Leicestershire, in the English Midlands.   He has been fascinated by birds from a very young age and began drawing and experimenting in his early teens. Since 1988, Mackay has been fortunate enough to be able to call him a freelance wildlife artist and illustrator. His main focus has always been birds, but recently he has been experimenting with insects (especially moths and butterflies), big cats and other types of mammals.   After several years of illustrating, his ‘break’ started in 1995 when he was commissioned by Oxford University Press to provide 29 plates for the Birds of Western Palearctic Concise Edition. But since then, Mackay has illustrated many books, including the RSPB Birds of Britain and Europe series by Rob Hume(Dorling Kindersley); Birds of North America; Pelicans, Cormorants and their Relatives by Bryan Nelson etc. Recently, he has had several pieces of work accepted for the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art.
