Critical Essay #2
To make sense of the connection between model and problem minority, I will primarily look at the Japanese Americans and the Arab Americans of the 1960s as an example because I think these two minorities perfectly represented both the model and problem minority of the United States. They both experienced been the Model minority at one time and been a problem minority at another. I will also discuss the Chinese Americans. The model minority myth of the1960s was created in comparison to the absent referent, which is the problem/bad minority of the time and gender obviously played a big role.
Japanese-Americans started off as a problem minority, which began after Japan Attacked the United States. Based on the film (days of waiting) and our class discussion, over 120,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated in 1941 as a result of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After the war has ended, the long imprisonment of the Japanese-Americans has ended with it and they were allowed to return to their homes, even though they had nowhere to go back to. Many of the Japanese Americans decided to spread out into different communities and states to blend in and to avoid creating big Japanese-American neighborhoods. The elders decided keep quiet about the incarceration and planned to never mention it because they were too shameful about it. Instead, they have worked hard and did their best to assimilate in order to get acceptance from the white Americans. One might argue why the Japanese Americans would be quiet after all that they have unjustly gone through. I think their decision to keep it all under the rug was influenced by all the things that they have gone through during the incarceration, so their decision can be justified by anything they say. Japanese-Americans got the label Model minority because most of the other minorities were involved in movements such as the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
