Law enforcement is a challenging profession, not only because of the situations officers face but also because of the many different type of people that make up the law enforcement profession. In this paper I will discuss the important elements of organizational behavior in a law enforcement agency and how these elements can challenge the effectiveness of an agency. Some of the most important elements that each agency faces are individual differences such as personality, values, emotions, moods, and attitudes. A person’s personality can seriously impact the organizational behavior of an agency.
Recognizing and studying individual behaviors is imperative for the proper functioning of any agency because they can help predict how and why people behave the way they do. The unique combination of characteristics that makes up the overall way a person interacts with others can be described as personality. A good leader in any organization will take into account the differing personalities of all of his or her subordinates as they make decisions about the direction the agency will head in. An individual’s personality is based upon their heredity and environment. The top five personality traits are extroversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, conscientiousness, and openness to experience (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, & Ulh-Blen, 2010). Good leaders should be able to recognize their employee’s positive personality traits and try to build on those to improve that employee’s work performance.
Diversity is another major element of organizational behavior. An agency needs to embrace diversity because in order to meet the needs of the public, all cultures and walks of life need to be represented in the agency.
