The Constitution has been to basis of our democracy. It has only been amended twenty-seven times since its birth, was seems to be a minuscule amount of change in an expanse of over two hundred years. Many people this number is too small and that Constitution should have greater willingness to amend the Constitution. However, more frequent amendment of the Constitution can result in the politicization of the Constitution and upsetting federalism, which both portray negative effects that would develop with a larger inclination to change the Constitution.
The Constitution is meant to frame democratic debate; however, this national framework, with a greater willingness to alter it, would result in unnecessary modifications based on the politicians in power. Debating is like a game; two opposing sides both with the intent of winning in debating. The rule book for debating is the Constitution. However, a greater willingness to change the Constitution is similar to changing the rules and thus changing debate. One side of the debate can muscle their way to winning by simply changing the rules amending the Constitution. The fact is that politicians are temporary in comparison to the longevity of the Constitution, making it sacred and vital to our nation. Hence, it is important to have a conservative mindset and to only amend the Constitution with absolute necessity of the betterment of the current and future generations of the United States, rather the having the Constitution altered with extraneous adjustments to satisfy the whim of the current politicians and with the sole purpose of improve their chances in debate.
The system of Federalism has been an issue since the Articles of Confederation involving the delicate balance between the different levels of government. While, it seems to be at equilibrium, the federalist system is very fragile, and an impulsive movement, such as amending the Constitution more often, can upset the system.
