Cognitive Psychology Definition Paper

    Cognitive Psychology is a branch of psychology that studies the mental processes of perception, learning, memory, and problem solving. Cognitive psychology analyzes step-by step the way an individual thinks, remembers, moves, and talks.
The Beginning of Cognitive Psychology
    Psychology in general was the outcome of going deeper into philosophy combining science and philosophy to analyze the brain and how it affects behavior. Between the years of 1920-1950 behaviorism dominated the study of the human behavior.   Behaviorism analyzed the theory of stimulus-response notion, and it was based on experiments conducted primarily on non-human subjects. Still many researchers showed interest in the study of mental processes in a more detailed manner.
Key Milestones in the Development of Cognitive Psychology
    During the World War II the development of the first digital computer was created that could solve logic problems the same way humans did. The need for computer modeling arose questions about how the human’ s brain works, and which processes lead to problem solving.   The idea of creating a machine that would model human behavior and reasoning signaled the need of the cognitive psychology.
    Another event that signaled the development of cognitive psychology was the publication of a book, Syntactic Structures by Noam Chomsky (1957), which analyzed the mental structures associated with linguistic knowledge. Due to the fact that Chomsky thought that he did not include all the detailed information he wished he had, he published another book, in 1959, which was a review of Verbal Behavior, a book by B.F.Skinner-one of the most influential behaviorists of all times. The review of Chomsky is considered one of the most important documents of cognitive psychology.
