Author, speaker, and songwriter Joan Bauer explores difficult issues with humor and hope in her eleven novels. Joan has won many awards. Joan and her husband live in new York. She has one daughter. Joan grew up in River Forest, Illoins. She was overweight and tall when she was growing up and often felt like an outcast. Joan kept a diary as a child and always wrote stories and poems. She always knew she wanted to do something with comedy as a career. Joan’s parents divorced when she was 8 years old. It was a devastating time for her. Her father is deceased and has affected the way she writes . Joan started out writing newspaper and magazine articles and then she slowly started building her way up. The best time she has a writer is when she’s working on a book and can laugh while writing.
12 year old baker Foster is forced to move to a tiny town called Culpepper after and Elvis impersonator , who is also her mother’s ex-boyfriend , gets into an argument and abusively touches her mother. Foster has a big dream to have her own cooking show someday and meets Macon who also has a big dream ,being a filmmaker. Macon works for a famous actor named Ms. Charleena who has taken a break from acting and is staying in her hometown Culpepper. She takes Foster under her wing and discovers foster has a big secret she can not read. Ms. Charleena tries to teach a discouraged foster how to read and write.

The significance of the title “close to famous’ . is to show the dream of Foster and how her dream of being a famous baker , with hard work and determination is slowly coming true.
The setting is in a small town called Culpepper , Virginia . The town is tiny with a small population of people there are not many food places and there’s only one grocery store.
