In this essay the health initiative of the Association of radical midwives will be discussed; the essay will look at the history of the Association of Radical Midwives, the future for the midwives radical initiative and the benefits to women of implementing the initiates of the Association of Radical Midwives. The Association of Radical Midwives was founded in 1976, this is because midwives became increasingly concerned about how technological women’s birthing experience was becoming, and as a result wanted the experience of women to be more individual rather than that of the biomedical guidelines and approach followed by obstetricians (The Open University, 2010, p. 138). The Association of Radical Midwives is not the only organisation that has concern regarding women’s health in childbirth; the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) was formed in 1956 by a lady called Prunella Briance. Prunella had a very traumatic experience when she was giving birth and as a result wanted to improve the type of experience women have during childbirth (The Open University, 2010, p. 139).     The word radical according to ‘Webster Dictionary (1996) comes from the Latin word ‘radicalis’ which means roots, of or pertaining to the root; proceeding directly from the root or origin; reaching to the centre, to the foundation, to the source, to the principles; fundamental, thorough-going; unsparing’, (cited in The Open University, 2006. p. 103). The word radical is also used to describe people who are revolutionary and who want to make fundamental changes in current practices or those who want to a return to values and practices that have been used in previous times (Open University, 2006. p. 103).
The Association for Radical Midwives was founded in response to the increase use of technology in women’s pregnancy and in childbirth (The Open University, 2010, p. 138), not only that but the midwives wanted the experience of pregnancy and childbirth to be woman-centred, personal and a positive...
