CancerProbe Pty Ltd is a Melbourne, discovery based, Biotechnology Company that was founded in late 2000 by Prof. Els Meeusen, Dr. Norm Mancuso and Dr. Alex Lopata (Australian Biotechnology, 2012). CancerProbe encompasses the latest innovative technology involved in the discovery of bio-markers and human antibodies as indirect cancer detectors (Case Study A, 2009). This privately owned company has a granted US patent (7, 329, 542) on a method of isolating antibody secreting cells (ASCs) from lymph nodes and draining a tissue that harbours a cancer in order to detect and identify cancer specific antigens and human antibodies (Lopata et al, 2008). The aforementioned would assist in easier, diagnostic, vaccine and therapeutic development for the disease as opposed to the currently used, less than perfect techniques. The ideal marker satisfying thi criteria would be in no particular order; easy to administer and interpret, be objective and non-invasive and most importantly possess high specificity and sensitivity (Konety, 2006). European and Australian patents are still pending. Though the main focus of the company remains cancer, the technology can be applied to a vast number of diseases. CancerProbe hopes to partner in order to maximise the potential of its technology platform. In order to develop their science into a product few obstacles must be overcome, the main one currently being the lack of funding.

Based on the research and results obtained in Meeusen’s laboratory where ASCs were used to prepare “ASC probes” to identify and determine the presence and stage of parasite infestations (Meeusen and Brandon, 1994). ASC-probe approach is said to be useful in research of vaccines for infectious diseases. According to Meeusen, this approach may also be used to detect the presence and stage of various other diseases, including cancer. CancerProbe’s science is therefore based on using ASCs as stage-specific antibody probes to detect...
