Business research ethics are highly important.   Business research “is a process of planning, acquiring, analyzing, and disseminating relevant data, information, and insights to decision makers in ways that mobilize the organization to take appropriate actions that, in turn, maximize performance” (Cooper & Schindler, 2011, p. 4).   If any part of the research process has been conducted unethically, everything associated with the research then becomes questionable or unreliable.   Unethical research behavior could result in legal action such as being barred from practicing medicine.   The following will illustrate the unethical research behavior presented in an autism research article, the parties affected, how the behavior affected others and how it could have been avoided.
Several years back, parents worldwide were talking about the possibility of a commonly required vaccine increasing the chances of a child developing autism.   “Dr. Andrew Wakefield was the first researcher to publish a peer-reviewed study suggesting a connection between autism and the vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella” (Cheng, 2010).   A colleague of mine chose not to have her child vaccinated for measles, mumps, and rubella because of this research.   She and I discussed the research on several occasions, and she remained steadfast in her decision.   I was more leery based on past experiences-my family members; my husband and I and our children received the vaccine and are autistic free.  
Later, Wakefield “was barred from practicing medicine in his native Britain after the country’s top medical group found he conducted his research unethically” (Cheng, 2010).   Furthermore, “his study in the medical journal Lancet was widely discredited, however, after Britain’s medical regulator found it did not meet ethical standards; other studies found no link; and a British journalist...
