While the Internet in today's society is used for a multitude of reasons including entertainment and social engagement, one of its primary functions remains to be education. But with no central governing body presiding over quality control, in an online environment where misinformation is literally a finger click away, can we really trust the education we are recieving? One recent issue that has been given a high level of coverage recently is the matter of breastfeeding censorship by the Internet media, particularly the social media site Facebook. Due to the controversial nature of breastfeeding in today's social context, the credibility of this coverage spans a wide scale. With few authoritative bodies speaking out against a sea of badly written personal opinions, the onus is on the consumer to dissect what is true, what is false and what is pure promulgation. In order to analyze the online coverage of this topic, I will assess the reliability of several websites including that of a non-governmental organization (NGO), news publications, individual blogs and Facebook itself.

Amongst the vast crop of newspaper websites that emerged, the United Kingdom's (UK's) The Guardian paper gave quite a well written, detailed and up-to-date synopsis of the issue. In the article, 'Facebook's Nudity and Violence Guidelines are Laid Bare', writer Charles Arthur referenced the Facebook 'Abuse Standards Violations' Guidebook and quoted a Facebook employee in support of his claims. Despite being a secondary source in nature, this news article is made substantial by reference to a primary source and also the apparent absence of any personal opinion. This fact heavy feature is a news piece at its core and is free from direct bias, despite setting a questionable tone around Facebook's policy decisions.
