Botany is the science devoted to the study of plants. Botany is part of the science known as biology. With knowledge of botany, we can learn the science of plants. Some of humankinds first concerns were what different types of plants could be used foods and drugs. ("Botany," 2009)
One type of botanical study is pharmacology. Pharmacology is the study of the changes produced in living animals by chemical substances, especially the actions of drugs, substances used to treat disease. By using pharmacology, we can learn what different types of plants have medical value and what types of medical drugs they are used in. ("Pharmacology," 2009)
Another type of botanical study is the use of herbal medicines. This type dates as far back as the late 15th century. In the start, the theory of herbal medicine was based on the superficial resemblance of certain plants or plant parts to specific human organs or parts. The appropriate herb was used for any disorder of its human counterpart. This type gave way to pharmacology but has since had a revival due to self-treatment from the higher costs of health care. Pharmacognosy is the study of drugs of natural origin. What this means is that organization like The American Society of Pharmacognosy are studying the use of natural plants as alternative medicines compared to traditional medicines. (Pharmacognosy.com, 2004)
