Bipolar and Unipolar Disorders

Bipolar disorder is often associated with mood swings that have can vary from severe depression to wild highs and mania. During periods of depression individuals with Bipolar disorder may experience feelings of hopelessness and lose pleasure in activities they would normally enjoy. When this shifts into mania these same individuals will feel euphoric and become full of energy and enthusiasm. These shifts in moods can occur several times per day, or a few times a year. On occasion individuals with bipolar disorder can experience depression and mania at the same time
Bipolar disorder is divided into three different subtypes. Each of these subtypes have their own unique symptoms. They are Bipolar I disorder, Bipolar II disorder and Cyclothymic disorder. Bipolar I disorder can have manic episodes that are dangerous, Bipolar II is a more functioning level of bipolar disease. Rather than having full blown manic episodes, individuals will have hypomania or mood swings and irritability. With cyclothymic disorder hypomania symptoms and depression symptoms are much milder and the highs and lows are less severe than in Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorders.
There are several factors that can contribute to bipolar episodes. These include biological differences, imbalances in neurotransmitters, an imbalance in hormones can trigger symptoms of bipolar disorders, inherited traits and the environment an individual lives in can also trigger symptoms of bipolar disease. Bipolar disease is one that requires treatment for the duration of an individual’s life.
There are several things that can be used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. These can include medications such as mood stabilizers and antidepressants to help with the depressive episodes. These can be used in conjunction with a treatment team of physicians, psychologist and social workers. In cases of extreme...
