The ban of contraceptives and abortion in the Philippines

The Philippines is one of the few countries in the world today to criminalize abortion along with contraceptives. Any person who undergoes or assists with an abortion is accused of murder and is sentenced to years in jail. The catholic religion and churches are against the use of contraceptives and abortion condemning anyone who goes against their values. With the majority of the filipino population being catholic, many woman are pressured more than ever to continue with their pregnancies. As a result of criminalizing both abortion and contraceptives, many unwanted pregnancies arise.
The catholic church is the most powerful influence among the filipino population. With a vast amount of undesired pregnancies arising, illegal and unsafe abortions are secretly being performed everyday. Countless young filipino’s are victims of rape resulting in unplanned pregnancies. Many pregnant rape victims are too ashamed to tell their catholic families of their pregnancies for fear of their response. The Philippines is a pro life country and the majority believe that even a rape pregnancy should not be aborted. Pregnant women in poverty that can barely care for their children are feeling the pressures to abort just as much as the young filipinos who were raped. With a drastic increase of unwanted pregnancies, illegal abortions are being performed more than ever before. The government is failing to realize that the criminalization of abortion has not prevented the procedure, yet has made it extremely unsafe. Countless illegal abortions are being performed in filthy places using unsanitary equipment. Dangerous health complications and fatalities are especially common within illegal abortions.
