I was in utter shock that Luo and I were being sent away. Why us? It just didn’t make sense. I mean, both of our parents were influential people during the Cultural Revolution, Luo’s dad more than mine, but I still didn’t understand why naïve teenagers were sent away to the mountainside for reeducation. It was unclear to me then, but now I understand why the reeducation campaign targeted people like us.
We were young, naïve, and ambitious about our dreams and the dreams we had for China as a whole. I remember seeing posters when we were still in the city of what looked to be powerful young men holding the Little Red Book above their heads pointing to a larger figure above them, which was Mao. The poster read, “The Chinese People’s Liberation Army is the great school of Mao Zedong’s Thoughts” and it was the first piece of propaganda I remember seeing. As months passed, more and more posters were found in the city that tried and persuade the youth of China to join the army of people that were on Mao’s side, but truthfully I didn’t know what to do. I was personally torn or maybe I was just being persuaded by the propaganda, but in my eyes Mao didn’t seem as bad as the image my parents created for him. Shortly after I discovered my own opinions on the subject, I was sent away to the mountainside where I reside today.
At first, I hated it here. The pace was much slower, the people much older, and the work much harder. Luo and I were domestic workers and were not use to waking up to carry buckets of shit on our backs (14). Luckily, we snuck an alarm clock in to help us keep track of the amount of time we stayed on the mountainside. Needless to say, that didn’t work because the clock mesmerized the innocent people that lived in our town. Everyone came to consult the clock, as though our house on silts were a temple (14). As this ritual became a habit and Luo and I became more annoyed and tired of living on the mountainside, but also realized how much power the last...
