Avoidant and Dependent Personality Disorder

Avoidant and dependent personality disorder, also known as Anxious-fearful personality disorder, are both Cluster C personality disorder. A person with avoidant personality disorder shows a pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to negative criticism, and avoidance of social interaction. Individuals who have this disorder tend to describe themselves as anxious, lonely, and generally feel unwanted and isolated from others. People with avoidant personality disorder often consider themselves to be socially unappealing and avoid social interaction for fear of being, humiliated, rejected, or disliked. Avoidant personality disorder is usually first noticed in early adulthood. Dependent personality disorder, on the other hand, is characterized by an excessive need for the person to be taken care of and a fear of being abandoned or separated from important individuals in his or her life. This leads the person to engage in dependent and submissive behaviors that are designed to elicit care giving behaviors in others. The dependent behavior may be seen as being “clinging on” to others, because the person fears that they can’t live their lives without the help of others. Also they may avoid positions of responsibility and become anxious when faced with decisions.
A new study, shows that the heritability of avoidant and dependent personality disorder traits might be higher than previously reported. The study used two different ways of measuring the disorders, at two different time points. The study was done with young adult twins who answered a questionnaire that included questions about personality disorder traits. Then sometime after that, some of those same twins took part in a structured diagnostic interview. Both identical and fraternal twins participated.
