In this assignment I am going to discuss the different theories of communication. I am going to evaluate Argyle’s theory compared too Tuckman’s.

Argyles theory   -
Argyle argued that inter personal communication was a skill that could be learned and developed in the same way as driving a car;   you watch what is happening then work out how to respond before making the response and then repeat untill the conversation is over.

The communication cycle.-
The communication cycle is when we understand what is being said, reflect and check out what the person you are communicating with is saying. When communicating to people we have to make sure they understand what we are saying and respond to it accordingly. The communication cycle has 6 steps;

1. Ideas occur;
You have an idea that you want to communicate.
2. Message coded;
You think through how you are going to say what you are thinking. You put your thoughts into language or into some other code such as sign language.
3. Message sent;
You speak, sign, write or in some other way send your message.
4. Message perceived;
The other person has to sense your message. They hear your words or see your symbols.
5. .Message is decoded;
The other person has to interpret or decode your message or what you have said. This may not always be easy as they may make out
6. feedback; response to what you have told them.

In a health and social care setting communication is vital and it is important you communicate well. Argyle believed that when you communicate with someone, the message is sent and then the receiver has to think about what was said before they can respond appropriately.   It is clear when someone has listened to you because of how they respond to what you say, for example if a question is asked the receiver should have full eye contact with the sender.
