A canary for one

The story under analysis is titled «A canary for one». It was written by one of the most famous writers of the 20th century – Ernest Hemingway.
Hemingway was born in Illinois. After leaving high school he worked for a few months as a reporter. Hemingway had three wives during his life. He had three sons: Jack, Patrick and Gregory.
He travelled a lot and used his experience in his works.
It is important to note that Ernest Hemingway played a big role in defining 20th century American literature.

The story takes part in 20 century. It has a narrative presentation whith elements of a dialog and the subject of the extract is drown from life.

There are three main characters in this story : the American lady. The author doesn’t mention her name as it’s unnecessary. In the whole story there are no names at all. Her daughter and the young couple.

The text can be divided into 3 parts. In the first part the author describes us the views that American Lady sees. In the second part there is a dialogue between the people. And in the last part we learn about their divorce. The narration is done in the first person. The narrator is a husband. But we recognized it in the middle of the story.

"A Canary for One" is the story of three people on a journey across Europe. The setting is laid in the train. The American lady goes to visit her daughter and she is taking the daughter a canary. The mother didn’t let her daughter marry her Swiss boyfriend, because she think that American men make the best husbands. The people in the train are all Americans living in Europe and have a conversation.
The young husband listens the conversation of the American lady and his wife. He speaks only 2 times: to make a joke that the lady does not hear and when he mentioned the wreck.

As regards the theme of the story t think it’s family relationships. A surprise ending the story, when we recognized that the American couple is going to separate. The American lady...
