A religious institution is a term used to describe an organisation which officially represents or ‘governs’ a particular religious belief such as the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is among the oldest religious institutions in the world and has played a prominent role in the history of Western civilisation. It teaches that it is the one true church founded by Jesus Christ, that its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles and that the Pope is the sole successor to Saint Peter. Catholic morality derives mainly from the Bible, religious tradition and, most importantly, the Natural Law Theory of St. Thomas Aquinas. Religious conscience, also a source of authority for Catholics, is crucial in moral decision making for a theist as it is believed to be the voice of God guiding us to do good and avoid evil.

The Catholic Church uses the Bible as a source of moral authority as it is at the heart of the religion and is believed to be the divine word of God. There are three main biblical themes which the Catholic Church adheres to: (i) creation (ii) Jesus’ ethic (iii) Paul’s ethics. The creation stories of Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 both highlight the sanctity of human life as we were created by God; ‘’and God created man; man and woman he created them’’ (Genesis 1:27). As a result of this, Catholics hold the view that all human life has intrinsic value which must be considered in all situations and so any action which could harm life, such as abortion, would be expressly forbidden. The second theme is Jesus’ ethic. The Old Testament teaches that we must follow the 613 commandments in order to act morally, however, Jesus replaced this idea with a ‘Golden Rule’ of love; ‘’Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart; and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
